Why People Hide Their Caste in India: A Glimpse into the Phenomenon of Self-Discovery Dilemma?

The question of one's identity, including caste identity, not being hidden in the name of culture is a very subjective and complex thing. It involves looking at multiple perspectives, the dynamics of culture, and the societal landscape in general. Let's check out some of them

 Viewpoint 1: Protection from Discrimination 

Argument: Individualism in maintaining caste silence may be a consequence of self-protection. These people may seek safety from possible discrimination, prejudice, and stereotype threats that can possibly occur in society. Counterargument: Now, one would argue that, for the sake of collective progress towards an inclusive society, identity must be worn on the sleeve. This band of people adheres to the thinking that, in order to work against stereotypes that give birth to biases, an individual must embrace and be identified with the group.

 Viewpoint 4: Impact on Social Change

Argument: Discussion and confrontation, therefore, of caste identity is one of the potential brightest stimuli.
